Don’t you love summertime? School is out, we are taking vacations and trips, barbeques, sunny days, AND the new ICD-10-CM codes get released! Yes, it has occurred already (earlier than expected), the FY2022 ICD-10-CM codes have been released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). For those of you keeping track of the dates of these releases, this FY2022 release will replace the January 1, 2021, release of updated ICD-10-CM codes. Also, remember that the FY2022 ICD-10-PCS (inpatient procedure) new codes were released back on June 4, 2021.
We will be using these new 2022 ICD-10-CM codes for encounters from October 1, 2021, through September 30, 2022. Go to the CDC website to review the ICD-10-CM files: ICD - ICD-10-CM - International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (cdc.gov)
The CMS FY2022 files that have been released include:
- Addenda (by Chapter)
- Code Description
- ICD-10-CM Conversion Table 2022
- Table and Index
After a quick review of the tabular addenda, the following “new” codes might be of interest to HIM and CDI professionals (this is not an all-inclusive list, just a few of the new codes to get the coding juices flowing):

The new code is U09.9 Post COVID-19 condition, unspecified. This particular condition and code have had lots of dialog and discussions regarding it and does have an instructional “NOTE” and “Code First” instruction which need to be followed.
But don’t forget that there are also several new inclusion terms for several already established codes, plus a review for new or revised “excludes1, excludes2, and code also” instructions which needs to be read over with the annual updates.
Updates to the Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting will be released at a later date, so stay tuned for that to come as well as the FY2022 Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) update.
As Health Information Management and Clinical Documentation Integrity Professionals, learning about the new codes is an imperative, and honestly I love that about our profession, always learning. In fact, the learning process involves obtaining knowledge about the clinical aspects of the diseases and conditions that are not identified through a specific ICD-10-CM code. Anatomy and physiology are part of the clinical coding skillset. So, between now and October 1, 2021, let’s all put our learning hats on and obtain education on this important annual coding update.
